Kerman Coronary Artery Diseases Riskfactor Study-KERCADRS
The study was conducted on residents of Kerman city aged 15-75 years. The sampling unit consisted of households residing in Kerman for at least one year. Using a single-stage random cluster sampling method and postal codes as the sampling frame (250 codes), individuals were enrolled. They were invited to visit the research clinic in the morning after 10-12 hours of fasting. All participants signed a written consent form and were examined for 10 coronary artery disease risk factors including hypertension, diabetes, obesity, physical inactivity, mental health, smoking and addiction, oral and dental hygiene, nutrition, sleep quality, and laboratory tests (FBS, HbA1c, TG, Chol, HDL, LDL). Demographic data such as height, weight, waist circumference, and education level were also recorded. A portion of the serum was stored in the center's biobank at -75°C, and whole blood samples on DNA cards or extracted DNA were also stored. The second phase was repeated five years later (2014-2018), with 2,800 out of the 5,900 phase one participants re-enrolled. New individuals were added to reach a sample size of 10,000 using the same method as phase 1, expanding postal codes to 420. The age range in phase two was 15-80 years. Participants were asked to bring their medications on the day of the visit. The third phase began in 2019, five years after phase two, by recalling phase 2 participants. The sample size of 10,000 and it is now completed.Outcomes investigated include the point prevalence and 5- or 10-year incidence of the 10 risk factors, incidence of heart attack and stroke, causes of hospitalization, crude mortality rate, and cause-specific mortality related to cardiovascular diseases.
